What does LOC mean?

Women with high porosity hair (or just generally dry hair) can often find it hard to create a hair routine that works for them. The slightly controversial LOC Method may be a good option to try in combating these issues.

The LOC Method is a moisturizing method for naturalistas. Each letter, L-O-C stands for each step you’re expected to take to get your tresses to look and feel their best. As with all hair methods, it’s not a one-size fits all. If you try it and it doesn’t work for you, that’s okay. There are plenty of methods where this came from.

L is for Leave-In

Section your hair and apply a water-based leave-in (or just water) from root to tip. This layer is what the other steps are going to work hard to retain. It will be easier to apply your leave-in if you detangle beforehand. If you haven’t detangled you may want to try applying the leave-in first and use your fingers to gently part your hair. But detangling first is your best bet.

O is for Oil

Honestly, there’s a lot of great oils out there. Find an oil that works for you! But if you’re on a budget, your kitchen may already have something suitable. Please don’t use vegetable oil, but coconut and virgin olive oil are both staples in many homes that could work.

Use SPARINGLY. Apply a thin layer to your strands. Remember, you’re not trying to fry your hair, we’re trying to retain moisture.

C is for Cream

It’s time to loc in all your hard work. Grab a cream-based moisturizer and seal the deal (see what we did there?) The cream you choose will act as a sealant to retain in all the products/moisture you’ve added to your hair in the previous steps.

If you find your hair is weighed down by the products you used try using less or wearing your hair in a protective style for a day before trying to wear your curls free.

And that’s it! You’re done. Show us your results on Tress. Tress is a black hair inspiration app where users post their beautiful hairstyles from all over the world. You can book stylists and discover new hair products too. There’s also a Q&A section where you can ask questions about this and other hair issues you may have. Someone in our community is always happy to help. See you on Tress!
